In the resplendence of William the Conqueror's London court, the lovely Saxon captive, Nicholaa, was forced to choose a husband from the assembled Norman nobles. She chose Royce, a baron warrior whose fierce demeanor could not conceal his chivalrous and tender heart. Resourceful, rebellious and utterly naive, Nicholaa vowed to bend Royce to her will, despite the whirlwind of feelings he aroused in her. Ferocious in battle, seasoned in passion, Royce was surprised by the depth of his emotion whenever he caressed his charming bride.
In a climate of utmost treachery, where Saxons still intrigued against their Norman invaders, Royce and Nicholaa revelled in their precious new love...a fervent bond soon to be disrupted by the call of blood, kin, and country!

I've been doing a reread of some of my favorite books written by the author over twenty years ago. Okay, most of this author's early writings have been reread by me practically every year since their original release. This one has to be included as one of the best.Normandy is invading Saxony and Lady Nicholaa is left alone with the servants and a small contingent of soldiers to protect her family and home. Her brother, Thurston, is leading a rebellion and her younger brother, Justin, lost his hand during the fighting and has given up on life. She's also been saddled with taking care of Thurston's baby. Three contingencies of young soldiers attempt to claim her home and take her before the new king who considers her a prize to be given away to one of his loyal barons. Each is driven away in humiliation. The fourth, Baron Royce, is a trainer of soldiers, and is able to succeed where the others have failed. He's amazed at Nicholaa's cunning and she's not only attracted, but finds he's a very patient and considerate man.
The tables are turned when presented to the new king and his wife, Nicholaa saves the life of the queen's niece and instead of being offered as a prize, she gets to pick her husband from the single warriors in the room.
Humor abounds throughout the story, heavy on the fun chaotic level, much of which involves the dialogue between Nicholaa and Royce. The romance is poignant and you'd better have tissues handy. While struggling over the idea that she's attracted to her home's invader, she comes to appreciate how her life is changed. And while Royce is patient, he is rigid in his expectations and schedule. Nicholaa is pure heat and spontaneity in comparison, as well as a strong strategist, generating much of the humor.
A great story, interesting characters and situations, told with the author's trademark flare, this book is worth a reread.

The Prize (Audible Audio Edition) Julie Garwood Anne Flosnik Brilliance Audio Books Reviews
This is one of my favorite books I read over and over. I cannot stress now much I like this book. I think Royce and Nicholaa are a great couple. They complement each other in the way their characters are opposite and how they interacts with each other. I love that the book is written from both points of view. It helps to have the man's point of view when reading a book. Not sure it would be as good without Royce's point of view.
Nicholaa is smart and cunning. However she has a quick temper and stands up to Royce. She also cannot hold a grudge, and can be a gentle sweet person when she is not upset. She likes to cry every now and then, which drives Royce crazy since he hates to see her cry. Royce is a great gentle guy with lots of patience. He trains men to fight, and never loses his temper. He is very honorable in all that he does, and he loves to tease Nicholaa and get her riled up. He has a great sense of humor. I would love to have someone like him withpout the lecturing of course. I like it when he lectures her and she just starts daydreaming. Royce thinks everything should be orderly and organized. It should be mapped out in and orderly way. Nicholaa is spontaneous and not necessarily organized. So I love it when he starts his marriage is like a map lecture and Nicholaa can't believe what she is hearing. It's classic.
As far as the story goes, it is a William the conqueror setting. However you do not have the fighting that goes on between the 2 characters, because the one has taken the other ones home. Nicholaa settles in to make the best of it from the beginning. So you have a little bit of conflict between Nicholaa and Thurston (her older brother), as well as some conflict between the main characters and another Lord's 2 commanders. Most of the story is about Royce and Nicholaa adjusting to one another. It's a sweet romance. I think it is a great story, which she adds to by adding Nicholaa brother Justin in the mix whom Thurston left to die, since Justin had lost his hand in battle. Thurston thought that Justin would be better off dead than one handed. Royce however trains Justin to become a knight, and conqueror his handicap.
I highly recommend this book.
I love audiobooks, but this is one for .
As the reader, Anne Flosnik's weird interpretation of speaking English is so painful to listen to I just couldn't stand it. I LOVED her in the Kushiel books, but this is a book worthy of someone who doesn't sound like her jaws are mechanical and run by steam.
I may try to read it on ebook at some point, but I've already bought the audio book and the thought of laying out another $8 for the version just hurts too much.
Wish audio publishers would take the hint about Flosnik before she ruins more books.
I purchased this book in 1993 in paperback form. No e-readers back then. This was the first story that I read by the author (Miss Garwood) but definitely not my last. I was a history major and senior in college. I was captivated by this story from the first and I believe I have been a romantic since I have had memories. I feel like a throwback and I didn't marry a Royce (the hero); but, that's another story for another time. I have since repurchased Miss Garwood's many novels in electronic form and over the years have read them over and over because the characters are just that unforgettable. Nicholaa (the herorine) is timeless as she is beautiful. This 5 star review is a long time coming so BRAVO Miss Garwood.
